Wrong. Many public-interest attorneys do track much of their time for any case where attorneys’ fees may be recoverable. I have billed 2,400 hours at a law firm and worked the equivalent as a public-interest attorney. The latter is just as stressful as the former.

I wish this were realistic for litigators but it’s just not, in my experience (even with a staff union).

On the topic of law firm billable hours, do not assume that just because you do not go into big law you will be working any less. As a non-profit lawyer, there have definitely been years when I’ve worked the equivalent of 2,400 billable hours, and I know may of my colleagues have too.
