I don't have much confidence in the NYT, but there are liberal groups in DC that ostensibly care about food stamps and other poverty programs. They should be dumping on the NYT and other media outlets for incompetent reporting.

It's pretty fucking incredible that supporters of food stamps and other anti-poverty programs don't even think it's important that people hugely overestimate the money being spent on them. But no one ever said liberals were very sharp.

This matters because people hugely overestimate the share of the budget going to antipoverty programs. What possible excuse does the NYT have for not taking ten seconds and 10 words to put the spending in the program in a context that makes it meaningful to readers.
