My PERSONAL favorite is the 2002 St. Ambrose University production in which I was Ross. Very partial to the Denzel black and white, especially the Porter monologue (typically stellar performance by Stephen Root). “Scotland, PA” is a fun take on the play set in 70s fast food, too.

Macbeth’s indecision really gets moved to the forefront in Act II, as he makes decisions independently and almost always gets immediately persuaded by his wife. It speaks to their relationship that she can influence (sometimes through insults/manipulation) and speak freely to her husband.

Malcolm immediately realizing the danger that he and Donalbain are in and fleeing is so interesting to me; it’s a smart move, even if it plays directly into Macbeth’s hands. “There’s daggers in men’s smiles” is such a beautifully accurate line.

In the early parts of the play, Lady Macbeth definitely interests me more, mostly due to her use of imagery, her ability to manipulate, and her clear command of her husband. At this point, Macbeth, although he is acting, seems much more passive.

I think it’s about free will vs. fate. Do the Macbeths choose their path freely, or are the witches controlling them? This is the subject of the essay my seniors write as we read the play. It’s telling how quickly both of them jump to “MURDER!” once they hear the prophecy. #SundayMacbethChat

I often wonder what Duncan’s men think of him as a leader. He clearly trusted the Thane of Cawdor and was betrayed, and here he’s setting himself up for that AGAIN. The Thanes seem to LIKE Duncan, but I wonder if they respect him. #SundayMacbethChat

Lady Macbeth: “…yet do I fear thy nature. It is too full o’ the milk of human kindness.” This opens us up to Lady Macbeth’s manipulation of her husband, keeps up the idea of outward appearances vs. inward thoughts/feelings, and gives us the milk imagery that will be important later.
