Charlie found and reported an oil spill in New Mexico last month. It got some attention and was actually addressed. However, as you'll see in this video, what the industry considers "clean" likely isn't what you would if it was your land.

This is still a pre-print but is in line with much of the peer-reviewed science on methane emissions from the Permian. "Texas emitted 4,038 kt CH₄ with a 3.60% loss rate, while New Mexico emitted 1,095 kt CH₄ with a 2.10% loss rate" This is why US LNG producers can't meet EU regulations.

This should surprise no one.

Ten years ago the US had a major methane storage leak at Aliso Canyon. It cost the company around $2 billion in damages because of the health harms to local residents. Now in Australia there is another case of residents being poisoned by the natural gas industry. Likely to be costly as well.

IEEFA expects Europe's LNG imports to decline by 20% between 2025 and 2030.

Starting from the beginning of the disaster in October and up until the end of the disaster in February, methane plumes from the Aliso Canyon gas storage facility likely reached at least 6.2 miles downwind from the blowout site into the nearby Porter Ranch neighborhood in northwestern LA County.

Earlier this year we went to Japan and documented methane emissions from LNG import facilities. This year Tim also went to Canada to document methane emissions from their oil and gas infrastructure. The bad news is wherever we go, we find a lot of emissions.

The oil industry says they need better technology to find the source of methane emissions. And yet when they are given that info, they only respond 12% of the time. "the number of alerts leading to action rose from one per cent to 12 per cent in the past year." They know, they just don't care.

The 2nd highest risk factor for dying early, after high blood pressure, is high air pollution. A key step in reducing air pollution is to stop burning stuff: wood, fossil fuels - whether it's in a car engine, a wood burner, or a power station. Better public transport, walking + cycling routes vital.

This NYT piece on methane from oil and gas uses the industry language that the problem is leaks. As we always point out, that isn't true. The majority of methane emissions from oil and gas production are INTENTIONAL, not leaks.

The oil and gas industry in the petrostates like TX, NM and ND like to talk about how the taxes from the industry fund so much new infrastructure. Maybe they should chip in a little more?

The EU methane regulations are not some gold standard but at least acknowledge the problem. The LNG industry, with its big methane emissions problem, wants them gone.

"According to Secretary Wright, there was agreement on both sides that the regulations as they are now written mean no more U.S. LNG would flow into Europe." The point of regulations to limit methane emissions is to not allow dirty LNG into Europe. So, these regulations would be working.

“The water situation in South Texas is about as dire as I’ve ever seen it,” said Mike Howard, chief executive of Howard Energy Partners, a private energy company that owns several facilities in Corpus Christi. “It has all the energy in the world, and it doesn’t have water.” Exxon and Tesla.

This should be a headline around the world. “If they follow the behavior of other global seep systems, there is the potential for rapid transfer of methane to the atmosphere from a source that is not currently factored into future climate change scenarios.” We will regret ignoring this.
