Well, it's official. We just received notice that all authors on the Sixth National Climate Assessment have just been released from their roles. The NCA is a vital, Congressionally mandated resource for our nation as we prepare for the impacts of climate change. This is a huge loss.

The NSF has stopped funding research into disinformation, a disinformation researcher highlighted why this is such a bad idea: “We know false information is out there, we know it spreads widely, and it’s important for people’s health and for democracy to understand what we can do about it.”

My PhD student's NSF grant was terminated today. Her dissertation investigates why air pollution monitoring, metrics, and regulations don't properly capture the harms experienced by marginalized communities--esp in the most polluted Detroit neighborhoods. She and I are happy to talk with press etc.

I got an email yesterday afternoon that my NSF SPRF Postdoctoral Fellowship was terminated. My grant focused on testing interventions to address online misinformation and I was 8 months into a two year appointment.

The thing about science is that if a phenomenon such as climate science weren’t real, they wouldn’t need an executive order forbidding its study. The better we explain the social processes of science, the clearer it will be to everyone that this EO is an admission that climate change is real.

For those outside of academia, the Dept. Education thing is extraordinary interference. I am not allowed to accept grant funding if the sponsor gets a say over what I publish. That's important. It protects me from outside pressure to tank results that are politically or financially inconvenient.

This looks like part of a massive multi-faceted attack on scientists and universities from the Trump admin. They have cancelled funded federal grants, frozen NIH panels, promoted anti-scientific figures and conspiracy theorists like RFK Jr in positions of oversight. This is just beginning…

Years of research suggested that Twitter and other social media apps were vectors of misinformation and propaganda, including from fossil fuel interests.
