Coming after years of anthology contributions and mini-comics, Walker Tate's long-form debut LASER EYE SURGERY was one of my most highly-anticipated books of the year, and I'm sad to say it did not live up to expectations. My latest review, for TCJ:

Basically you have the world's richest most powerful people saying "we've invented technology that will eliminate all writers and artists & we're very excited about it." Then you have the press say how excited THEY are about it. Then you have artists/writers saying there's nothing we can do about it

News of it never circulated here, but
@elijahbrubaker.bsky.social
died a few weeks back. I have a few words in this piece for the Comics Journal, reflecting on his work and mourning his loss.

This piece is informative insofar as it quotes Felker-Martin's own words, but its tone and its dismissal of things like comics-gate as merely "controversial" are disquieting. Also, the ways in which the quotes are attributed is needlessly confusing.

Today on SOLRAD, I offer an appreciation of Michael DeForge’s BRAT (Koyama Press, 2018) and argue that it is, in fact, one of the key books in DeForge’s bibliography and authorial biography:

The date commemorates the launch, in 1957, of this magazine, whose back cover included this definition: "We believe to be in the line of good comics, understanding good to mean comics that are strong, comics that know how to be both tough and cheerful, violent and human," (continues)

Today on TCJ I go on a deep-dive into 2000AD’s NIGHT ZERO by Brosnan and Hopgood and THE CABBIE by Martí — two comics that have nothing in common other than they’re from the late ‘80s–early ‘90s and they’re about taxi drivers. The meter’s runnin’, get in:

Today's
#ArtBreak
is Ethiopian photographer Aïda Muluneh--though you can be forgiven for thinking that her bright, highly stylized, steeped-in-symbolism works are paintings. She casts herself as the subject to depict histories of trauma and the complexity of hope around food aid and social uplift.
