Another Moment of Democratic Uncertainty In my last post, I suggested that many Americans sense something isnât working in our democracyâeven if theyâre unsure how to think about the problem or where renewal might begin. As we approach the 250th anniversary of the American experiment, itâs worth recalling another moment when large numbers of people faced similar uncertainty. When Thomas Paine wrote Common Sense, he wasnât speaking to ideologues. He was speaking to those in the middle, people who sensed something wasnât working but werenât sure what came next. Remain loyal to the crown? Or support the revolution? Today the dynamic is different, but the uncertainty feels familiar. Most Americans are not radicalized. They are exhausted. The public policy group More in Common calls them the âExhausted Majorityâ - roughly 70% of the country. They are not looking for upheaval. They are looking for reassurance that the system can still correct itself. Yet the loudest voices in our politics rarely represent them. History suggests that moments like this are decided not by the extremes, but by whether the middle engages. As Paine argued, Americans âhave it in their power to begin the world over again.â In this case, to renew democracy. That power still exists. The question is whether we will use it. Over the next several weeks, Iâll explore what democratic renewal might actually require, not just winning elections, but restoring the capacity of our institutions to govern. Because if the American experiment is worth preserving, we should be honest: repair will take more than rhetoric. It will take sustained effort - and time.
