It was great to join the Southern Maine Labor Council Labor Day Breakfast today. Labor Day is a moment to honor the people who keep Maine moving — the teachers, shipbuilders, nurses, farmers, loggers and truck drivers who form the backbone of our state.

I had the pleasure of visiting Tanbark in Saco, and what a shining example of Maine ingenuity it is. Melissa, and Charlie's team are scaling packaging solutions that replace plastic with biodegradable fiber right here in Maine.

You know what Maine needs more of? Homes that are warm in the winter. You know what it also needs? Homes that are energy efficient so it doesn't cost a lot to heat that home. And finally you know what it needs even more? Houses that people can afford.

It's true -- smart women vote! They also help run gubernatorial campaigns (and let me borrow their computer during speech prep). I'm grateful everyday for all the smart women in my life. #SmartWomenVote

Nothing like getting together with the people who literally build Maine from the ground up at the Association of General Contractors Pit Party. From major infrastructure to the small projects that keep our communities running, Maine’s contractors are problem-solvers, innovators, and job creators.

Really appreciate Peter, Chris, & the rest of the Geiger team showing me around their Lewiston facility. Visionary business & community leaders, they have turned their former factory building into a modern office & distribution hub powered by one of the largest private solar installations in Maine.

Always great to get to fish with my old friend Lou Zambello, and see his story about one of our adventures in this month’s Maine Sportsman.

Some people ask me, "What is it about this moment that makes you want to run?" and my answer is, "What ISN'T it?" If you were ever going to step up, this is exactly the right time. People in Maine are just struggling too much and life is just too damn hard here.

Last week, we stopped by Maine Grains, a terrific business helping to build a better Maine by turning an old jailhouse nobody wanted into a vibrant food hub that supports local farmers and connects local bakeries, and kitchens across New England, to Maine-grown products.
