Updating SSGI solution in LE, both for #darksouls3 and #darksouls2, a lot of code/features are now unified across the games.

Water SSR Defog fix. As SSR reflects what is on the screen, the pixel being reflected has fog which is calculated based on eye distance, thus leading to "double dip" on fog in the scene.

Posted this before, another showcase of plausible directional contact shadows, which uses bent-normals/ao and sphere caps. The lights below are not "true" shadow casting lights. Left image is just AO as attenuation, Thanks to @arycama.bsky.social for his help with spherical caps test.

Working on ADP in #darksouls3 lighting engine, setting up shadows and lighting. I have setup atmospheres to be detected more accurately now. Will just be posting shots in this thread. Love the large scale AO using skyshadowmap, especially noticeable in 3rd image.

Working on reducing the package file sizes in DS3LE. LE already only stores requried vertex attributes like Position/UV Coordinates to reduce data stored. Now there is zlib compression added to data as well.

As I had indicated earlier different solutions to handle occlusion under the feet. Here I reduced the contribution of contact shadows from ambient just near the player feet area to avoid over darkening.

Darksouls3 has issue of not rendering shadows when the player is hollow, every other hollow has shadows. Now there is a fix for that in DS3LE(Including Lite). By caching the draw call state(VB, IB, Matrices) during Gbuffer render pass and then replay that into the shadowmap.

Had to up the denoiser to handle alpha tested/thin objects better otherwise the new shadows will not be fully stable. There is some compromise on the player feet ghosting, but can be mitigated through other means like reducing GTAO contribution around feet area. www.youtube.com/watch?v=j53A...

Thanks to @arycama.bsky.social for helping me with contact shadows using Bent normals + AO. This is still WIP but is very promising. 1st Image using just AO for light attenuation, 2nd image my old method similar to one used in Crysis3. 3rd image is the new technique.

LE in #darksouls3 allows fast edits in real-time, with in-build high performance shadows, users can rapidly change areas allowing artistic expression, the default preset will come with full scene dynamic shadows and match base game, Some edits from discord early access users.

Lite version 0.2.16 of #darksouls3 lighting engine is now available for download for supporters. It fixes some runtime crashes which happen on few systems. Tweaks to tonemapping, lightshafts to align parameters with base game.

Patreon page is now up as some members requested that over Kofi. Any support is very welcome towards the development of DarkSouls Lighting engine for 3/2. DS3LE-Lite is now available there. An early access build which has all tech except Full-scene shadows and VolFog.

Captured the DS3 Base game post process lightshafts effect in DS3LE-Lite. As LE does upscaling(Buffer swaps) and depth buffer changes, this effect needed to be isolated and captured. Lite follows the base game params as faithfully as possible and this was a missing piece.

DS3LE has a remapped depth buffer which is Reverse Z(Near Plane - 1.0, FarPlane - 0.0) instead of Normal Z(Near Plane - 0.0, FarPlane 1.0). You get better depth precision, as computers are very good at storing. Youtube : www.youtube.com/watch?v=KzmK...

guys dark souls 3 lighting engine is SO cool holy shit in other words, dark souls 3 now has proper anti-aliasing and upscaling as well as huge improvements to lighting, shading, and visual effects!!! i can't WAIT to show it off on stream. here's one comparison the creator showed a while back

DS3LE-Lite is now available for download from my Kofi for members. This build contains all the tech from DS3LE except volumetric fog and LE-Shadows. Lite stays faithful to base game lighting parameters. DS3LE-Full version will be free and available to download from Nexus.

Improvements to Rotation tool in #darksouls lighting engine. Is now more aligned with how blender handles it.

Improving Skylight Rendering specifically shadows. Using the surface normal - note this is not the gbuffer normal as that is too noisy and using importance sampling over a hemisphere which is aligned to surface normal. It simulates the sky mask as a large scale AO

Implementing the Skylighting in #darksouls2 lighting engine. Notice the shading(normal map) and shadowing compared to baked lighting. This is not perfect as it will require strategic placement of point lights to complete the scene , however LE allows you to place ambient lights in real-time

Fixed a nasty bug for shadow caster culling. Happens due to cross talk between lights. 1st Image is single light shadow casting, 2nd image the lantern shadow is gone when spotlight shadow is enabled, the spotlight location is shown in 3rd image. 4th image with issue fixed (1/1)
