Augustus John's 1930 portrait is of Caitlin Macnamara some six years before she first met Dylan Thomas at The Wheatsheaf in Bloomsbury. Caitlin was sat on a stool at the bar when Thomas staggered towards her, laid his head in her lap, and mumbled a proposal of marriage.

Eugène Jansson's painting from 1898 depicts the large expanse of water in central Stockholm known Riddarfjäden. Jansson was one of the most significant artists in the last years of the 19thC to create a style of painting that reflected the essence of Scandinavia.

Gustave Dore's drawing (1882) was made for Edgar Allan Poe's narrative poem, 'The Raven.' It depicts the narrator opening his chamber door to a mysterious tapping, as described in the poem: 'I opened wide the door; Darkness there and nothing more.'

Henry Lamb's portrait of Evelyn Waugh takes us back to 1928. It was the year Waugh published 'Rossetti,' wrote and published 'Decline and Fall,' and married Evelyn Gardner, setting up house together at 17a Canonbury Square, Islington in London.

'Jane, Evelyn, James and Helen.' (1913) Philip Connard emerged in the early years of the 20th Century as a painter of great promise; his interiors were particularly admired. The illusion of a happy home was shattered by the outbreak of war a year after this work was made.

'Portrait of a Girl.' (1904) From early in his career, Ian Strang was recognized as a brilliant draughtsman. He was much admired for his portrait drawings, inspired by those of Hans Holbein in the Royal Library at Windsor Castle.

In 1908, Sorolla travelled to Seville to paint the gardens of Real Alcázar. The palace, one of the greatest surviving examples of Mudéjar architecture on the Iberian Peninsula, was designed in a style inspired by Moorish taste and workmanship. This is one of the garden's ponds.

'Dandelions,' was painted by the Danish artist Bertha Wegmann around 1910. It wasn't an arbitrary choice of a plant to paint: the dandelion was used to promote the women’s liberation movement in Scandinavia because of its capacity for uncontrolled, strong-willed growth.
