“Get up. We’re leaving.” Liu Qingge doesn’t want to spend another second in this strange room with heavy air that tastes like blood. “No,” Shen Jiu says. “He’ll be here soon and it’s better if I don’t fight back. If I try to run, he’ll kill me. If I lie here and let him do it…” His eyes are dull.

Ning Yingying nudges him and wordlessly points at the bed in the middle of the room. It’s not empty. There is a boy around her age lying on the bed, still as a doll and staring up at the ceiling. He’s only wearing inner robes, rough-spun cloth scrubbed white, the clothes of a servant.
