I really don't understand why train companies can't just let us pay the difference if we miss our train, they still get their money and it's more relaxed for us! LNER's policies in particular suggest the total failure of government to invest in railways for decades.

i remember being booked on the Bham to Euston ( unknown to me this was originating in Liverpool and was delayed over 1 hour. i was not allowed to use another service, with the same company, despite it getting into Euston at my original scheduled time !

I think if the train is cancelled, you can travel on the next available without penalty. It's if you, the paying customer, have the temerity to change your mind, or you need to travel on a different train due to an emergency at home, for instance, that you get punished.

This is also an example of the ADHD tax. Pay substantially extra for a ticket, or undergo huge stress (attempting to get to the station on time) and risk paying even more than the flexible ticket. This country is not serious about environmentally-friendly travel: not trains nor cycles & scooters.

A 👌 thread by the very excellent @carlafrancome.bsky.social on the stressful ticket pricing we have to put up with when travelling by train. If govt wants to cut congestion and transport carbon emissions, train ticket pricing needs to be at least as flexible and affordable as driving. 🤷‍♀️

Looked at trains for a trip I'm making tomorrow with my seven-year-old. £72 ticket or around £6 in electricity plus a little wear and tear. Unsurprisingly, I'm going to drive. Don't get me started on peak time tickets - no point here where peak time seems to be 5.30-8am. Empty trains after that.

Here’s me leaving the one little pitiful stretch of cycle lane with a bit of protection on Green Lanes. I meet people every day in Haringey who tell me that they’d cycle if there was a safe route through the borough. I do hope Haringey council will get on with it soon. - 16/17

Sabine cycled a lot at primary school, but didn’t cycle as a teen because her friends didn’t. So it was amazing to see her find the confidence to get back on the road – and now she’s even inspired a few friends to start cycling too. 4/7

Having spent several years and £1,000s of pounds using public transport, just before turning 21 she made the switch to cycling. She dusted off my mum’s old bike, pumped up the tyres, and we rode to uni together a couple of times to find a quiet route she felt comfortable with. 2/7

This is the most beautiful and moving story, of a woman in her early 20s who’s travelling on public transport, when her dad encourages her to get a bike out of the shed and start riding. Read it and weep! 🥹🥹🥹🥹
