Amazon have never been competent, they were first, gained momentum, and scaled that up but even now their inventory control is archaic, lazy, and beyond inept (I have examples) so any market they try to get into that requires anything more than brute-force momentum, they will abjectly fail at

Another part of the problem is probably that, besides not really understanding what they were competing with, Amazon can't resist making the user experience worse if they think they can squeeze out another penny.
