My knee has started hurting a lot—suspect patellar tendinitis but might need to go to the doc to be sure. Any suggestions for stretches/exercises/etc? It’s bad when I go down stairs or the downstroke while pedaling.

Sunday: dropped off some books at the library, got some coffee and wrote for a while, checked out Time and a Half Books in Ravenswood (great curated selection), bought some new lipstick, and now off to meet a friend for a beer or two.

The only thing sadder than hearing from ppl who want to bike more but are afraid of drivers (understandable) is finding out someone used to bike a lot but stopped because they became frightened of drivers (also understandable).

Headed to a networking event yesterday. People sometimes ask me how I can ride in heels—it’s actually easier than walking in them.

Heard from a friend at Disney+ that there are multiple levels of freakout internally, both from internal dissatisfaction, concerns about subscription cancelations, and of course the big one: concern about a boycott spilling over into parks and cruises.

Quick impressions from my first show at the Salt Shed (the Pixies, so good): amazing venue, terrific sound. Love the bike parking, but I wish they (or the city) could do something about the block or two of cars parked in the bike lane just north of the venue right after the show ended.

I think I’m gonna ride to Edgewater with my trailer to kayak on the lake today. I’ve never ridden that far with the trailer—should be interesting (for drivers).

Sometimes transitional dressing is as simple as wearing boots instead of sandals. On another note, I couldn’t get an appointment for a haircut until next month! So expect some creative ‘dos.

Got up early to bike to a networking event downtown. Between the rush hour commute and hanging out in a modern coworking/incubator space in the Merchandise Mart, I felt like a Real Professional™.

Truly amazing how many pedestrians start to cross a dedicated, SEPARATED bike lane without looking to see if anyone is coming.

I actively avoid calling people on bikes “cyclists.” It fuels an “othering” or “us vs them,” and makes it easier to claim that safe infrastructure is for a small in-group. None of which is helpful. It may take more characters in a post, but I just say people on bikes. Because that’s what they are.

Headed off to meet friends for dinner and drinks last night in fall-like temps. Managed to be minimalist enough to bring only the tiny bag! Not easy when I’m the kind of person who likes to be prepared with a scarf, extra bungee cords, etc. But the pockets in those pants help.

It’s transitional wardrobe season, motherfuckers! Looking forward to wearing this white skirt from Quince this fall with some heavier tops and layers. However, it requires a step-through and a chain guard.

Riding in regular clothes is awesome but trying to belittle someone because they sometimes ride in Lycra is so fucking weak and EVERYONE who rides should push back. It's just a kind of fabric (that makes certain activities more pleasant).

I commute in lycra occasionally. I also do "fun" rides in shorts and a t-shirt. This is so silly. Why do we, as cyclists, need to create "tribes." Everyone on a bike is doing it right, and we should fight for the rights and safety of every single person on a bike no matter what they wear.

Bike Tales: I was unlocking my bike after dinner near Fulton Market the other night. An older guy was also unlocking. "Hope we miss this thunderstorm, huh?" I said. He asked where I was headed. "Irving Park," I said. "Wow, that's far!" he said. Funny how relative "far" is on a bike.

Remember those “how to take your outfit from day to night” articles in women’s magazines? Do they do those types of pieces anymore? Do any women’s magazines even still exist? Anyway, here’s an example of “day to night” on a bike.
