In my used copy of C.J. Cherryh's HUNTER OF WORLDS (1977), the previous owner made exactly one mark/notation in the book: they circled a subjunctive use of "were" in a sentence. That's all. No other underlinings, notes, marginalia. Just that. Subjunctive "were" really got to them.

I'm re-reading R.A. Salvatore's THE CRYSTAL SHARD for the first time in more than 20 years and... honestly? What a surprising first novel. It kinda slaps. I don't know that I'll have much to say about it, but it's fun and detailed and surprisingly clear on it's (admittedly simple) themes.

More fields need something like Game Studies Study Buddies to very seriously but accessibly break down the major scholarly works in their field. Absolutely important work and I find myself lamenting that there isn't an sf studies or fantasy studies version.
