Alongside the Ruby 4.0 release last week, I published charm-ruby over Christmas, bringing @charm.land's excellent terminal UI libraries to Ruby. A full TUI framework, reusable components, styled output, forms, markdown rendering, spinners, charts, and a lot more! Demos below ⬇️

The highlight of our year was hosting the SF Ruby Conference and hearing from so many talented people in the industry. On Friday, we published a playlist with the first 30 talks from the conference. Here’s a quick breakdown of each of them:

@marcoroth.dev had been talking about Herb, a new HTML-aware ERB parser and tooling ecosystem, throughout 2025. As the opening keynote at SF Ruby, he explained his journey obsessing over an idea and learning new technologies to find the right solution.

I took some time and ripped out all slim templates from my medium-size personal app and replaced them with plain erb. It's one less level of abstraction to deal with, and I get to enjoy the perks of herb linting and Reactionview (thank you @marcoroth.dev!

To celebrate the 30th anniversary of Ruby and the release of Ruby 4.0, the first 32 talks from the SF Ruby Conference main stage are now live on YouTube! This includes keynotes from @marcoroth.dev, @palkan.bsky.social, and @paolino.me. We’re working on uploading the rest next week.

Herb Lint found a half dozen minor issues with the erb templates in Sidekiq Pro and Enterprise. Fixed! ❤️

Week 46 - Herb v0.8, Inline Edit Custom Element, and more!

Tried @marcoroth.dev's Herb VS Code extension and loved it: - inline display of parsing errors - format on save - `herb analyze` finds issues across files I'm sure there's more, but these are the big ones that I used effortlessly in my first 5 minutes with it. Very nice! github.com/marcoroth/herb

Today: removing `erb_lint` and my IDE tw CSS class sorting plugin... and adding `Herb` ❤️

Shoutout to @marcoroth.dev for Herb. Just fixed a bunch of small typos in our HTML that it found. Browsers are pretty good at fixing these issues automatically, but I'd sure rather be sending correct HTML instead.

Announcing ractor-shim, a new gem that reimplements Ractor on top of Thread & Queue: github.com/eregon/racto... This gem provides the full Ruby 3.5 Ractor API (Ractor::Port, Ractor#{join,value,monitor}, etc) on TruffleRuby, JRuby, and CRuby 2.7 to 3.4.
