Proposal: move RubyGems (the gem and bundler CLI tools) to the same Ruby org that governs the language itself. It's an accident of history that Ruby, its dependency tools, and its dependency hosting are managed by three separate entities. (And it hasn't gone great.)

TIL, #Python edition - everyone knows about list and dictionary comprehensions, but there are also generator comprehensions which are pretty cool. E.g. > (x * x for x in range(100)) # => <generator object <genexpr> at 0x10548f780> Those work with everything that expects something enumerable.

When I saw #Python code like: processed = map(normalize, map(clean, filter(is_valid, items))) I immediately realized why Pythonistas believe that list comprehensions read better. I'm really surprised they didn't add some form of pipeline chaining to make such transformations more natural.

This year I've been with #Python for the first time in many years, and I got reminded why I chose #Ruby over Python a long time ago batsov.com/articles/202... Don't get me wrong, though - Python and Ruby are both great and there are plenty of things that Python does better than Ruby.

After spending a lot of time recently with statically typed languages I'm really shocked when I see code like "True + 5" somewhere. P.S. The type "bool" in #Python derives from "int" for historical reasons, but this also shows how dangerous inheritance can be. (for me this was quite surprising)

I had totally forgotten that #Python didn't have a boolean type before Python 2.3 (circa 2002). That's the main reason for the weird boolean semantics there. (e.g. 0 and empty collections being falsey)

Started watching the second season of #Peacemaker tonight and I quickly realized I remembered absolutely nothing from the first season. 😅

Maybe because I'm a phone in front pocket type of person.

It's kind of funny how bad Apple is at keeping secrets these days - pretty much everything it released yesterday got leaked accurately months in advance. Makes the keynotes a bit pointless to some extent... Another bunch of relatively small updates. Only the iPhone Air looks interesting to me.

Another great article highlighting the many merits of #OCaml xvw.lol/en/articles/... OCaml continues to be for me the most interesting language I've learned since the days of #Ruby and #Clojure, and it inspired me to play quite a bit with #FSharp and #Rust as well.

#nREPL is now 15 years old! (it was born in July 2010) Funny enough, I've been the project's steward for ~7.5 years - since the spring of 2018. #Clojure forever! In the REPL we trust!

I hear more and more often that #Python and #TypeScript (or JS) are the natural choice for pretty much every project, just because LLMs tend to work best with them. While I get this sentiment, I also find it pretty sad... The world of programming would be pretty boring if we go down this road.

If we want Bluesky to be a real alternative, we must be patient and persevere. This experience of being the pioneers must have been the same with Twitter in the early years. Most of us joined when it already had millions of people participating. The more active we are, the quicker Bluesky will grow.

Good discussion about rv here, that I had totally missed a couple of days ago! I'm not a huge fan of the rv name myself (that came up a few times in the thread), as I always felt that "uv" was super random, but naming is hard and I know that it doesn't matter much after a while.

RV (something like Python's UV, but for #Ruby) looks pretty cool andre.arko.net/2025/08/25/r... I liked using UV with Python and I'm guessing the experience with RV would be similar as well. It's a bit said that all such tools have to be rewritten in #Rust (or similar), but nothing's perfect.

Тъжно е колко зле са нещата със споделените колела в София. Има само една фирма, която работи по тази линия (Cyrcl), и всичките и колела са супер потрошени... Не знам какво са ги правили, но масово имат спукани гуми, счупени скорости, седалки, калници и т.н.

I've noticed today that 10 years ago I have doing some 3 day business trips halfway across the world - e.g. to New York and back. (1 day to get there from Sofia in each direction) Fun times, but I don't think I can handle such trips anymore. 😅
