Equally balanced big picture broad strokes with intimate and impactful character moments. Top of the line #StarTrek.

I enjoyed #StarfleetAcademy “Vox in Excelso” for exploring the duality of Jay-Den’s upbringing while giving us a long-overdue update on 32nd Century Klingons. I love that this show empowers the characters to stand up for what makes them unique, respect differences, and find common ground.

I am begging makers of children’s products that require a plug to use vertical AC adapters instead of horizontal. The childproof outlet covers (with closing panel doors) can’t accommodate horizontal plugs and I shouldn’t have to pay extra to use your product. Looking at you, Hatch sleep assistant.

#StarfleetAcademy “Vitus Reflux” is absolutely brilliant from start to finish. The lessons, the cast chemistry, the character development, the humor…it’s so well-balanced and a delightful surprise. This show is getting the #StarTrek formula right. It’s energizing and hope-filled.

Loved the use of opera underscoring in an episode that was, thematically, an opera itself—centered on forbidden love and conflicts of duty. “Beta Test” felt very much like a modern TNG episode.

There’s an interesting parallel between two Kurtzman-directed Star Trek episodes. In the Discovery Season 2 opener, “Brother,” Burnham recounts an ancient story about a girl who created the Milky Way. In the Starfleet Academy premiere, Aka similarly speaks of the original Academy existing long ago.

I really enjoyed both episodes of #StarTrek #StarfleetAcademy. “Kids These Days” had very natural character development beats for every character, some great humor, and awesome performances by the whole ensemble, with Hunter and Rosta being most notable (which is great for co-leads out the gate).

Harbaugh and Tomlin going the same year is wild. I don’t even follow football as closely as I used to but I am a Ravens fan and next year will definitely be different

This has been such a productive break, but also a restful one, filled with lots of toddler joy. I’m not ready to go back to the grind of work tomorrow. The weekly routine makes the days/weeks go by so fast and break was a good slow down. I wish I could find ways to slow down during the work week.

Today I learned that Marv’s tarantula scream in “Home Alone” is silent because Daniel Stern was terrified of spiders and didn’t want to scare it and risk getting attacked. He did it in one take and the sounds were all added in ADR. Still the scene that gets a huge laugh from me every time.

Homemade banana chocolate chip pancakes and black coffee is not a combination I indulge in often, but this Saturday morning has been so much better because of it.

I started reading “The City We Became” by N.K. Jemisin this weekend (and listening to the very well-edited audiobook alongside it…the use of reverb and sound in the background is incredibly additive). I am only two chapters in but it is a delightfully unique fever dream of a fantasy novel.
