I was 16 when 9/11 happened and 18 when we invaded Iraq. My coming of age was watching all the adults I had been raised to trust and respect losing their fucking minds in violent revenge fantasies and jingoism, and being told I hated America anytime I voiced opposition to any of it.

This was true for decades, but now they run the entire government instead of part of it. It was horrifying back then, was never treated seriously enough (I remember explaining it to a journalist friend 10 years ago who had not heard of it) and now we’re all suffering the consequences.

When you have an audience or a business you have to ensure that you always provide a lot more value to people than you extract from them. If you don't then, long term, it all breaks down. Young people I talk to today...they feel like the whole entire world has broken this contract with them.
