We have one for our bedroom (sorry kids). It’s not awesome tbh but better than nothing. A large thing to store for the other 360 days of the year though and it needs to be somewhere that won’t freeze (so can’t just leave it in a shed over winter).

I occasionally see something on an HD TV when I'm away from home. It still looks weirdly 3D and unreal to me. I have to remind myself I'm looking at real people and not something computer generated. No-one else seems to experience this. 🤷‍♂️

Lots of environmental things affect IQ: social environment, nutrition, volume of reading, going to school, parental decisions, sustained stress, ... However, the underlying genetic component is very substantial, and also strongly heritable.

Total tax as share of GDP is at it's highest point since WWII, but it's still only middling by OECD standards, and at the median income, the tax wedge is lower than almost everywhere in Europe and only a couple of points higher than the USA.

There were outliers like this when I was a teenager 45 years ago, and “going to bed late and distracted, then not functioning well when woken too early” has surely been the way of teen life throughout the generations. The distractions may have changed but have always been there.

20 years ago when I worked with NEETs, many had chaotic lives, no grounding or anchor (not all obvs). Expecting them to rock up at an interview at 9am when they hadn’t got to bed until 5am. Like everything else in the UK, problems caused over decades that will take an enormous effort to fix.

Whiffs of fitting the “data“ to a hypothesis. No mention of all the boring kids who went to bed at regular times.

30 years' ago, this sort of anecdotal evidence around chaotic lives and work readiness was available as well. Then we were too worried about young people drinking until they passed out, taking drugs, joy-riding, etc., etc., to spend much time thinking about when they went to bed.
