One curious thing on this site about speaking out against the encroachment of LLMs is that inevitably you get accused of being anti-tech. I don’t hate technology. I’ve used machine learning in my own code before. But I also recognize that oligarchs are so hellbent on pushing this tech for a reason.

On their own accord, a student tapped a prompt into ChatGPT about an influencer who has been in the news.

This point hasn’t been given nearly enough attention. If you applied actually existing research principles to genAI, it would never be allowed anywhere near a university, research project or classroom.

Ironically, it appears that AI chatbots hallucinate for the same reason that students feel compelled to use them: They were socialized in a high-stakes testing culture that rewards guessing and maybe getting it right over admitting when there's something you just don't know.

As a mid-career professional but early career educator (entered academia at 57), I agree with this sentiment. Like any profession, there is canonical techniques worth building on and other practices that simply do not meet this moment in time. What are folks doing? reading? trying? revisiting?

It genuinely melts my mind how so many allegedly smart people are willing to simply discard the utterly crucial differences between the embodied, organic consciousness of human beings (and bees, and dogs, and fish) and the networked, disembodied simulacra of such that is an LLM.

This is the peak Axios AI story. Workers are getting stressed because they’re under pressure to find something useful to do with AI. If they don’t investors will have bought into a bubble. Why do workers hate investors?

Replacing human judgement with mathematical models to make things more "fair" and "consistent" is an idea that's been around for over a century, but we keep discovering (again and again) that these models fail due to their design and input while providing cover for systemic cruelty.
