Being a genealogist means you get to inform people that they are related to everyone, to much awkwardness. Merry Christmas, everyone.

The AI propagandists see research essentially as a search engine problem rather than an analytical one. I think this stems in large part from the first assumption: that any information you want to access is available on the internet or digitally and so it's simply a processing challenge.

There is no understanding of the fact that the overwhelming majority of historical source material is not digitized or that digitization does not make those sources immediately historically legible.

It’s a reminder that handwriting recognition — even without this kind of crossed letter writing — is a holy grail, but enormously complex compared to OCR (itself still not 100% as we know). Projects like Transkribus are getting close, but lots of caveats & complexities.

I think we need a mega thread of everyone's craziest archive stories.

When we say "no, everything hasn't been digitized," I need you to understand that we really mean is that virtually nothing has been digitized. This is because the realm of primary sources that historians use is incomprehensibly large.

DNA has been used to identify a Jane Doe believed murdered in the early 1900s. The body of Alice Spence (nee Burke) was found in a well in Saskatoon in 2006. She left behind a young daughter, but apparently descendants had no idea of the drama in their family history. #Genealogy

I'm attending a conference this month at Cranfield University. I'm eager to learn more about how they are using genetic genealogy and biomolecular archaeological methods in conflict recovery and identification!

This is my plea: stop using colourised photos in the news and in books. Don’t encourage ‘fun’ distortions of historical images that could produce confusion, for the sake of clicks/likes. Accept historical images with all their flaws and gaps: they don’t need ‘correction’, they need interpretation.

I’ve written lots about the problems with historical photo colourisation (which also uses forms of AI). This is an extension of this practice (an extreme one) reliant on the same logic of emotional ‘impact’ outweighing veracity, and ignoring or refusing to accept the historical limits of imagery.
