Pinocchio. 2005. Prelim drawing and notes vs the final illustration and details. Pencil, oil and charcoal on paper. 16”x20”. I changed the mushroom to a tree stump as a nod to his wooden origins and decided to go with clockwork instead of pulleys. He sold at a small show in Chapel Hill that week.

The making of Hazel Ludlow at Black Apple Bog. 2025. From setting up the reference shoot, getting into costume and props (hockey stick), to ruining my posture and hand cramps acting out the character. Then progress and details of the final artwork. A lot of stuff happens before the drawing begins.

When I was working on “The Nightmare Tree” (a long time ago), I made some rough dioramas out of Sculpey and twigs and a flashlight to set up some of my lighting references and play with perspectives. The project hit a publishing wall and got cancelled, but I enjoyed working on these little bits.
