My 2026 has been a divorce-shaped Stygian nightmare of housing insecurity, drifting between Airbnbs, couchsurfing + housesitting. But the goddess just blessed me with my own tiny apartment! I need to move/furnish it for myself + kid almost from scratch: a humble call for help if you can to do so!

If I compile another poetry volume, should I post about it or upload it quietly to mitigate the disappointment when no one reads it? Or just leave it to rot on my hard drive? I bought the ISBNs, I suppose. Not sure what the point of that was. Or this. Pointless creeping thoughts in the quiet hours.

Friends and books will both disappoint us occasionally. But at least with books, you can donate or resell them.

Layering very light glazes of pencil for the right effects. I start off with sepia red and peridot to create shadows. I’ll go over that with brown ochre and Venetian red to pull it all together. This is just the first pass to map it out. I’ll do this 5-10 times until it all gets pulled together.

What you erase is as important as what you draw. 2022. Worms Headley. Charcoal and pencil on toned paper. Having a paper that works as a midtone leaves you so much room to put down and pick up with charcoal. I’m just using my eraser the same way I would a pencil.

A quick look at cloud rendering in soft pastel. This really just boils down to deciding where to pull the lights over the darks and where to push the darks into the lights to create shape and depth. The goal is to trick the eye into perceiving more topography than is actually there.

I softened the shadows and gave her gown more jewel-like hues by making the shadows a deeper veridian green and laying warmer tones over them. Pencil layers are usually applied in thin veils of color. I probably had 10-12 layers of very transparent pencil for the finished piece.

If you can, strive to be a kind person in the world. Also, carry a large grumpy owl on your shoulder, for when the kindness thing doesn't work out.

Don't hide your laughter from the world. Be an inappropriate giggle at a solemn funeral, or a haunting cackle that echoes across an empty playground at night.
