On this day in 1918 my great uncle, Private Edgar Wood, was killed at Villers-Outreaux near Cambrai while fighting with the Welsh Regiment. He was 20 years old. He is buried in the tiny cemetery of Moulin-de-Pierre with 47 others who died that day.

Authuille Bridge - one of many bridges on the Albert to Arras line demolished in March 1918 as the Germans advance. The red building seems to have survived the bridge demolition - looking at the date on the wall it was only built the year before! Map @GreatWarDigital

#Arnhem81: today in 1944 Operation Market Garden began. The Air Armada took elements of three Airborne divisions deep into enemy territory and filled the skies as men dropped between Eindhoven & Arnhem, as seen in these private photos of the time.

Today we laid to rest the South African soldier recovered during the Hill 80 project. With his reburial, the last of the men we found has now received a final resting place. More than 100 missing soldiers have been recovered and honoured thanks to the support of so many.

If anyone is visiting that London place and finds themselves in the vicinity of St Paul’s Cathedral, I’d recommend spending 20 minutes or so to take in “The Watch”, a lovely free exhibition in the South Churchyard covering the cathedral in the Blitz and the work of the St Paul’s Watch.

At least two Canadian War Graves gravediggers died in June 1919. Pte. Wifred A. Nickerson of Nova Scotia was killed by an exploding detonator and is buried at Bois-Carré British Cemetery. Pte. Nathanael E. Kern of Ontario was killed by a phosgene gas cylinder and is buried at Houchin British Cem.

A cautionary tale from the 🇨🇦 War Graves Detachment, 1919: "I found a Detonator in the afternoon. I retuned with it to my Tent. I took the brass screw from the top of the Detonator and the explosion occurred. This witness made the X his hands being in too bad condition for him to sign his name."
