I was surprised to find a plaque in a memorial garden in Leicestershire that honours a Royal Marine killed during the Battle of Trafalgar. Private James Green served on board Nelson’s flagship, HMS Victory, and was killed on this day in 1805. 📍Lutterworth 🇬🇧

Private Albert Bayliss, Royal Warwickshire Regiment, was killed early in WW1. For a decade he lay buried as an unknown soldier in Broodseinde Military Cemetery. His remains were exhumed in 1924, and he was identified by a number on his boots. 📍Perth Cemetery (China Wall) 🇧🇪

Lt Roger Paffard was one of six naval officers who drowned when the car they were in crashed into the harbour at Setubal, near Lisbon, as they headed to a cocktail party on this day in 1950. 📍Lisbon (St George) British Churchyard 🇵🇹

Alexander Davie, Australian Infantry, died of wounds received in action at Gallipoli. Five months earlier his brother, James Davie, had died of wounds also received at Gallipoli. Both had been evacuated to Malta and are buried in the same cemetery. 📍Pieta Military Cemetery 🇲🇹

Halifax MZ920 took off from RAF Croft, North Yorkshire, and was joining other bombers before an operation to attack Duisburg. An engine fire forced the aircraft to divert to RAF Church Lawford, Warwickshire, but the aircraft crashed before it could make it. 📍Dunchurch, Warwickshire 🇬🇧

Buried in the same cemetery as Captain Jefferies VC, and killed on this same day, is Sergeant Lewis McGee VC. Awarded his Victoria Cross for his bravery during the attack on the Broodseinde Ridge on 4th October, he would be killed just eight days later. 📍Tyne Cot Cemetery 🇧🇪

Captain Clarence Jefferies VC was killed on 12th October 1917 leading an attack on a machine emplacement for which he was awarded his Victoria Cross. His body was initially lost but was recovered and identified in 1921. 📍Tyne Cot Cemetery 🇧🇪

Sergeant Ronald Davies, of 166 Squadron, was onboard an aircraft detailed to attack Hanover. His aircraft developed engine trouble and turned to return to base, crashing as it was approaching to land, killing five of the crew. 📍Hinckley Cemetery 🇬🇧

Serjeant Jordan, a former policeman and reservist, went to France with the first expeditionary force in August 1914. He went through the retreat from Mons in early 1915 and, later that year, was awarded the Distinguished Conduct medal. 📍Ilfracombe (Holy Trinity) Churchyard🇬🇧
