Great thread. There was once a 20C British Politics Q that asked, "Was WWII the making of the Labour Party as a party of government?" I marked a great essay that argued indignantly (in good faith) that no, of course not, because Labour *weren't* the party of govt in the 30s and didn't cause WWII.
