A fair critique here. And one that's been made before but no one in government seems to want to listen. The Curriculum for Wales requires Welah history to be taught at all levels but never specifies what that means in practice. It needs to be far more directive.

Small note on Welsh coal history since it's in the news. Welsh coal was in decline from around 1920 rather than 1979. In 1921, 271k men worked in Welsh coal. By 1980 there were just 28k employed in (deep) coal in Wales. Thatcherism effectively killed the industry but it had been dying for decades.

Reform's lack of policy/understanding would have been exposed in the Senedd elections had there been an electoral system where voters choose candidates not parties. But that wasn't what the Labour Party machine wanted. At UK and Welsh level, Labour is its own worst enemy.

Big thanks to my seminar classes today. Their enthusiasm and discussion brightened my week. Working in a university increasingly feels like the last days of Rome but the students remind me what it's all really about.

An example curriculum is needed in Wales too. It would allow schools that want to to take advantage of the freedom and local focus the Curriculum for Wales allows but also give structure and support to the schools that need it.

What Welsh HE needs: -Merge everyone to create University of Wales. Pan-Wales departments with local branches. Rationalise course distribution -Financial incentives for Welsh 6th formers to attend Uni of W -Flexible degrees that can be studied in anything from 2 to 20 yrs. -Opt out of REF.

And increasingly 6th formers will doubt the wisdom of huge debt in return for being anonymous face in a large class that is also recorded so doesn't even need to be attended. They'd have a point. Universities need to forestall this by abandoning many old ways of doing things.

Meanwhile, WG has given tens of millions of pounds to Sheffield University's AMRC. Absolutely crackers.

A reminder to Welsh Government: you run higher education in Wales and your party colleagues are in power at Westminster. If you want devolution to survive - indeed, if you want Wales to survive - you have to actually do something about the crises happening under your watch.

Can't say I'm sad to see FAW's league cup plan getting rejected. For all the financial advantages to Welsh football, it felt unfair. For better or worse, the big 4 have chosen to be parts of the English club system and can't have it both ways.
