Back in 2019 I tried my hand at painting in the Blanchitsu style, after many years of aping Eavy Metal. Even though it was such a beginner effort, John left a comment and messaged me to encourage me and said he liked what I'd done. It was such a little thing but it's left such an effect on my art.

Thinking of this again. It's genuinely hard to overstate the breadth of impact John's work has had on the otherworldly and weird. I'd meant to mention Ralph McQuarrie at the same time, I think; absolute titans in their influence.

Also, the artwork he did for Codex Sisters Of Battle is not only my favourite piece of 40k art, but it might be one of the best, it's so cool.

Hearing the news about John Blanche… 😢 His artwork on the 3rd Edition starter set was my gateway into the hobby. What an amazing artist. RIP

If you're over a certain age John Blanche is utterly inseparable from Warhammer. The images he produced went a long long way to inspiring many in this decidedly silly hobby. Weird, wild, but also somewhat tongue in cheek, there's never been anyone quite like him. RIP

Damn. No matter what you thought of his art, he was a part of Warhammer 40k's DNA for decades. Rulebooks, codexes, everything felt the touch of his work, immediately identifiable as his. A true legend of the community. May he rest in peace.
