Why bother with the ballast of lore of the original story at all? Do we need well-trodden anchor points in our storytelling to even appreciate a movie now? Not against this work in particular, but seems crazy to me how much media nowadays is just references.

The German illustrator, Heinrich Kley, had a birthday yesterday! I first discovered his loose, yet frenetic, drawings in a 2-volume collection back when I was in art school. Left: "Nightmare" from the AD&D Planescape Monstrous Compendium, 1994. Right: Kley's cover the arts magazine, Jugend, 1910.

Just finished this. Never read the Fritz Leiber stories, I must admit. The comics are very good, not just the Mignola ones (which are excellent as expected), and the protagonist pair have an interesting and entertaining dynamic. More lighthearted than most Sword&Sorcery, I’d say. #ComicSky
