I got into writing young because of encouragement at school, drawing because of Digimon, and video games because of Pokémon Red, at least how I remember it. Digimon and Pokémon were just the coolest to me, and my oldest OC is just my interpretation of Flamedramon, haha.

I'm 50/50 in my approach. There are things I definitely know about the characters to start with, and then things I learn as I go. A lot of times a stray thought about something incidental turns into either an important plot point or something that matters in their backstory & behavior. (1/2)
