first off, when someone assigns a score to a game in a published review, it's etched onto the eye of god. this number becomes integrated into material reality. so yeah think about that before you try bringing your "opinion" into your criticism

One of the most frustrating things about being a critic and/or a journalist is the way that some weirdos (gamers, hostile devs & pubs) expect us to "consider" everything, invoke context for us to excuse them, and account for literally every external variable that our work could impact.

I hate the idea of anyone being effectively held hostage by review scores, whether that’s devs or individual reviewers or entire outlets. But I especially resent the suggestion that critics should purposely hamstring themselves when it comes to review scores. Fuck that. Die mad or make a better game

Yep. Some go into journalism to have access to power, to be power's handmaiden & PR. Others go into journalism to question & illuminate the operation of power & how some norms/systems hurt the powerless. Many full time creatives have “invisible safety nets” like bread-winning partners, trust funds, external support, etc. No shame on anyone, but it creates a false vision of success. The cost of going to cons alone on top of hoping to eat as a freelancer are untenable, IMO.

In #Absolum, I freed this chicken from captivity in one of the prisons of Jaroba. It followed me all the way to the final boss, Azra, the Sun King. It spent the entire fight being randomly targeted, but chickens are invincible in this game, so instead it was in a constant state of terror.

yep. if you don't have enough working games critics (regardless of medium -- podcasting, writing, whatever) then there aren't enough people to play a high enough volume of games for anything approaching true curation. obviously you can never have perfect curation, it's impossible. but it's worse now

Even when being prudent about my game purchases, there just isn't any money 👌 to justify expansive or exhaustive coverage. Most sites where I am can't afford to assign me stuff regularly, and when they do, it's usually at the expense of one of my peers in PH games media getting an assignment.
