The recent car crashes that destroyed two businesses’ parklets highlight the negative impacts of cars on our city and the need for policy and infrastructure to help people shift trips from cars to bikes and public transit as well as physical infrastructure to protect parklets.

We congratulate Director Kirschbaum on being named SFMTA’s permanent Director of Transportation and look forward to working with her to transform San Francisco’s streets and transportation system and help people shift trips from cars to bikes, public transit, and other sustainable transportation.

SFMTA beginning construction of the curbside bikeways on Valencia Street—replacing the flawed center bikeway—is a great step forward. Now, the City needs to extend the curbside bikeways to Cesar Chavez Street and widen the bikeways for the entirety of Valencia, ideally in 2025.

SFMTA’s plan to not expand parking meter hours in the evening and on Sundays is disastrous and inequitable, and runs counter to the goals and policies SFMTA and the City claim to prioritize. SFMTA must expand parking meter hours to fund Muni and other transportation improvements.

SFMTA should be making daylighting intuitive by installing bike corrals, bikeshare stations, planters or benches in daylighting spaces. In the meantime, ignoring state law and allowing cars to be store within 20 feet of crosswalks decrease public safety. We need leadership now.

Electric cars—and electric car chargers—will not solve the climate crisis nevermind our roadway safety crisis. To address our climate crisis and roadway safety crisis, we must help people shift trips from cars to bikes, public transportation and other sustainable transportation.

The California Coastal Commission approved the permit authorizing the closure of Upper Great Highway to private car traffic (aka converting the space into a park and public outdoor recreation space)! This is a massive step towards the creation a new, full-time oceanfront park 👏

. @RollOverEasy.bsky.social was the first radio show to broadcast live from an “autonomous” car and…the car unexpectedly stopped in a huge puddle and the radio show hosts had to exit—through the puddle—after the car called customer support and no one answered. “Autonomous” cars won’t save us.

San Francisco is required by state law to prohibit parking a car within 20 feet of a crosswalk. But—instead of following state law—the City is delaying implementation and proposing to paint 10,000+ curbs. The City should install physical infrastructure in these spaces instead.

California is launching an e-bike incentive program with $3 million funding. By comparison, the State has given $1.5 billion in electric car rebates. Funding for e-bike incentives is abysmally low—we need more! Support funding for the SF E-Bike Incentive Program at actionnetwork.org/letters/ebike.

SFO and OAK when?! It should be safe to bike to our two major airports and easy to securely store your bike there while on your trip. What we need is public officials to lead on these improvements.

“Newsom is floating the idea of excluding Tesla from state [electric car] tax credits, focusing instead on propping up smaller competitors to create a more dynamic market.” Smaller competitors, eh? Like e-bikes…? It’s time for an e-bike incentive program for all Californians.

“Dada, that person just waved hi to me!” The simple act of riding your child around on a bike is a reminder of why using a bike for transportation is better for people—and our society as a whole—especially when children are involved. We should help people shift trips to bikes.

Great Highway Park opponents said, “Put it to the voters…let the voters decide,” but changed their mind when the voters overwhelmingly voted to transform Upper Great Highway into a full-time, oceanfront park by approving Prop K. The voters have spoken—it’s time to move forward.

SFMTA and Public Works are planning a plaza on Church Street near Market Street. The plaza would widen the sidewalk, create space for local businesses and community, and provide a better experience for people walking, biking, and taking public transportation. What do you think?

Electric cars won’t save us: “People who biked on a daily basis had 84% lower carbon emissions from all their daily travel than those who didn’t. […] emissions from biking can be more than 30 times lower than driving a gas car, and 10 times lower than driving an electric car.”

With nearly all votes counted, it’s official: Proposition K passed 55% to 45%—a 10% margin!—and Upper Great Highway will be converted into a new, inclusive, accessible, and equitable oceanfront park 👏 Thank you to the leaders of the Yes on K campaign and everyone who voted Yes!
