“The AI industry is essentially unregulated, which has placed the burden for the well-being of kids heavily on the shoulders of parents.” As a parent of young children, I cannot emphasize enough how schools need to stop socializing children into GenAI users through partnerships with Big Tech.

I'll eagerly await the full story in January. In the meantime, I'm increasingly alarmed at the uncritical adoption & evangelical stance of those pushing AI & its rapid incorporation into existing ed tech. To be blunt, this is not going to help students be anything but fast, sloppy, & less capable.

It pushes back against politically motivated censorship, restores professional standards in school libraries, & affirms that every child … has a constitutional guarantee to access to books, ideas, & opportunity, no matter their ZIP code.”

The issues with AI and education are vast, and I appreciate that this story aims to engage with that complexity, but it misses the mark in so many ways by boiling it down to two competing ideas, 1) "AI is here to stay" and will transform the job market and 2) AI is bad for critical thinking. 1/8

I don't understand how anyone can watch how blatantly Grok is manipulated to answer the way ownership desires it to and then act like the other LLM chatbots couldn't possibly be similarly but less obviously compromised to produce responses in whatever way corporate interests and priorities dictate.
