A downside of working so hard at having a public persona of being a greedy, annoying asshole is that’s how juries will see you.

idk that "the left" is "giving away optimism as a political ideal" so much as "framing optimism in terms of things that seem much harder to get than a big rocket". like, i dunno, is "a society where sexual abusers are held accountable" less optimistic than "big rocket"? or is it just harder to sell?

even if they're reasonable enough to admit 'we really just want better ai/tech', almost none of them are building it and the non-builders resent and harass the ones who build for not following armchair specs

This is basically what I mean. This is a very specific, clearly articulated vision of the future that communicates to people how this tech should work for them. Knee-jerk opposition to the tech itself means your ideology is gonna get left behind.

The new standard of living should be to put these in every home: 1. Solar + batteries. 2. An AI capable PC with a local open source model + internet 3. A PC compatible 3D printer. 4. An electric car. Make households energy independent for transportation + capable of cottage industry.

I don’t trust any of these CEOs, but the problem with demagoguing the underlying technology is that we aren’t offering any alternative. Millions of people use LLMs. If our response is “lol just don’t” no one is gonna listen.
