We're seeking clarification from the government ahead of the upcoming #WoodBurning consultation. Given the low level of public awareness and widespread false reassurances about burning at home being safe & eco-friendly, the consultation needs to be robust & science-led. @emmahardymp.bsky.social

Dangerously high levels of PM2.5 (267µg/m³) & PM0.3 (particle count of 25k) when #fireworks used nearby (>300m away). Low cost monitors don’t measure UFPs (PM0.1) but likely this was extremely high too. This was just a few fireworks in neighbours garden, not an organised display.

If there's one point that needs hammering home, it's that there's no such thing as 'clean' combustion. You can have 'cleaner', but that always needs to be qualified.

Exactly- even “cleaner” doesn’t apply without qualifying. Reducing some emissions always seems to increase others. “Modern” stoves burning “Ready to Burn” wood may reduce PM2.5 but increases Benzo[a]pyrene (& others) This is now largest human made source in UK. Pellet stoves increase PCDD/F & SOx.

Its dangerous to suggest London has hit clean air targets as that's only for NO2. PM2.5 is still outrageously high due to solid fuel burning that causes over 800 tonnes while ULEZ saved 23 tonnes. @london.gov.uk should not be complacent about air pollution!

Excellent example of best practice from a local authority. Please urge RBK Lib Dem council to do similar @eddavey.libdems.org.uk as Surbiton is the worst place in the UK for PM2.5 pollution because so many people aspire to self sufficiency in Surbiton. Not The Good Life for the neighbours though!

Wood smoke is very targetted pollution – next door neighbour could be getting >250µg/m³ PM2.5 indoors while someone a few doors down may not even smell smoke! Very easy to ignore until your neighbour starts burning. That’s why it needs to be considered by emissions per appliance, NOT local averages.

Averages don't tell the full story -we need to look in detail. Wood burning is only emission source that is rising. "Ecodesign" stoves have caused devastation for neighbours in SCAs because Defra cover up the emissions per user & "exempt" stoves. 817000 people emit more PM2.5 than all power stations

Yet is in denial about domestic wood burning emissions as she feels her little wood burner is not harming anyone. Routinely blocks and mutes clean air campaigners when they challenge that view. There seems to be a common belief in the @greenparty.org.uk that #woodsmoke is “clean” air pollution!

Agree we must #AxeDrax, however people who claim to care about AQ should also acknowledge the total emissions from domestic wood burning (as they are happy to do for traffic). I am in the process of writing an expanded response to today's Environmental Improvement Plan published by the UK Government, which includes some broad targets for improving the UK’s air quality. But here are the main points:

Hazel is a Winchester local who moved into a property with a wood burner many years ago. She started using it to heat her home, but after learning about air pollution she became concerned about the impacts it might be having on her health and eventually replaced it with an electric stove.

We’ve been urging the government to commit to stronger targets for years, so we're pleased that the government has finally listened. The devil is in the detail. #AirPollution is largely below these levels already across the country and is still making hundreds of thousands of people sick.

Very obvious to everyone that Charnwood don't care about health and safety for anyone. Unfortunately HSE aren't interested in HETAS failures or dangerous emissions from "Ecodesign" stoves. There are no protections for those of us hospitalised by their toxic appliances!

Hope they actually enforce the limits in the EIP for solid fuel burning. The reduction from 5g to 3g of “smoke” per hour should rule out the use of “Ecodesign” stoves in Smoke Control Areas!

BBQs were more popular during the pandemic as people preferred to socialise and eat outdoors to reduce spread of the virus. LAEI data does not show how much of the “commercial cooking” PM2.5 is created by BBQs and wood burning pizza restaurants. 1/2
