What scares my male characters the most is loss. Regardless of their alignment, fear of loss directs their actions: + Loss of face amongst male peers/the powerful means one holds on to power at any cost. + Fear of losing loved ones means another will go feral to protect them. #HorrorWritersChat

I tend to write about obscenely wealthy people from the perspective of MCs brought into that world against their will--so close they can touch it, but it can never be theirs. They are, in fact, just another commodity within the household, captive. #HorrorWritersChat

I think isolation is an essential element of horror, and financial insecurity, resource deprivation, social exclusion etc. go hand-in-hand with isolation. I end up writing a lot of characters who are trapped in situations because they just cannot afford to escape them. #HorrorWritersChat

Financial status never factors into whom I write for. I write for horror fans, for the people who will brave horror because they like me, and for me. That being said, I wouldn't mind if my work scared someone wealthy and connected enough to want to adapt one of my stories. #HorrorWritersChat

It depends on the story, but I'm always rooting for the oppressed and the underdogs. The antagonists are most often people of privilege. They don't always get what they deserve, but it's very satisfying when they do. #HorrorWritersChat

#HorrorWritersChat I scare pretty much everyone, but when I kill the rich it's always in a brutal and humiliating way. Actually, in one story I basically put one character who was pretty much a stand-in for a very prominent oligarch in a I Have No Mouth And I Must Scream scenario.

#HorrorWritersChat As a rule, I do not write rich characters. But also as a rule, the poorer they are, the better their outcome is. If you see an ex-con as a character in a story *cough spoiler* then he's going to make it out. I'll fight tooth and nail to make sure he does.

My horror's equal opportunity. You do bad, you feel bad. You do good, well, sometimes you still feel bad, but your character will be redeemed in one way or another. Good and evil exist and come in all sizes, which is why I feel it important to illustrate that. #HorrorWriterschat

#horrorwriterschat Shit, that’s deep. I think the worlds I create tend to be focused on people who get by but certainly aren’t rich. They just prioritise - spend today, don’t save. The rich are evil.
