This week I'll circle back to IT WANTS US ALIVE, my menopausal demon hunter story. It's got some high tech weaponry and containment equipment, but the most important technology is an ancient Irish lyre that sings to demons.

There are a lot of speculative geo-engineering technologies that I can see being a very ripe source of eco-horror - pumping gases into the atmosphere to lessen radiation from the sun, attempting to fuck with micro-organisms to get them to absorb more carbon.

For me I'm going to be split between two things: Smart homes controlling all your shit And visually augmented glasses. Which is scarier? Your home turning against you, locking you in, bumping you off, or seeing shit that isn't there in your glasses and it's not you, it's not your brain, it's tech?

Yes. It was a microfiction, but so many just leapt on it, I might have to write it. You basically picked characteristics from a catalogue and your child was delivered: but in this case the child was recalled for defective traits. And she loved him. So she refused.

I'd best do mine. It varies, I do both. I have written sci-fi horror where tech is embedded, a threat, for good or bad, biotech, etc, and as a tool. My characters have used phones, I've written microfiction about AI going wrong, about children made to order, and returned: if it fits the story ...

I prefer the aesthetics of the previous century. That may just be nostalgia brain talking. I don't necessarily think a CRT television is any scarier than a flatscreen, I just like my tech clunky and chunky these days What makes it horror is the intent behind it, not the visuals

Funny you should mention it: in a story I finished the first draft for the other day, the main antagonist was released from a VHS tape it was trapped inside. Said antagonist went on a rampage once the tape was played. Did I mention the antagonist is a kaiju?

I think I've already answered this in Q2 (i.e. no) but when it comes to my viewing/reading tastes? Both, if done well. Obviously much of the best found-footage horror works with the grain of VHS and cathode-ray TVs, but e.g. Ex-Machina and Host did great work with modern tech

Catching up, somewhat. Tech is tech. We forget that wheels, fountains, cars, were tech once, something new and exciting. Our brains making something new. What's scarier, really? An old tv? An old setting? Nostalgia? Is tech our new religion?

I don't write tech a lot, most of my horror is historical. But in the notable exceptions it's either a thin veneer hiding the society's problems (The Forever City), or the cause of the problems (AInshittification). So I suppose for me tech is a tool.

Threat! OMG, such a giant threat. Sure, it's useful and unavoidable, but it's a hulking mass of shambling horror working to turn every bit of electricity in our brains into a profit, leaving behind a creeping numbness and rage.
