Trump’s tariffs on Canadian aluminum are unfair and unproductive. We’re pushing the government to counter with targeted tariffs on US products and find new markets for Canadian aluminum. We’ll do everything we can to support the 1,500 workers at the Kitimat smelter.

I get to meet with stakeholders in some unique “board rooms” — from riverbanks and underground mines to fire halls and fishing boats. Thursday, I got to meet with Gary and Christian from Shames Mountain. They assured me the most productive meetings are held on the chairlift. Agreed!

Our plan takes the GST off home heating, phone and internet bills, kids’ clothes and more. We’d make it permanent, too, meaning more savings for families. (And small biz would only have to change their prices once) Monday’s the vote.

I’m still pushing the government to restore the full Northern Residents Tax Deduction for the residents of Haida Gwaii. With the cost of living higher than ever and the government’s Fall Economic Statement coming in just days, it’s time for this change.

I was honoured to be in Gitwinksihlkw last night to attend the memorial of Sim’oogit Hay’maas, Chester Moore. Chester was an artist, a composer of songs, and a force behind the annual Hobiyee celebration, among many other things. He was “a giant of Nisga’a culture.” May his memory be a blessing.

My NDP colleagues and I have been pushing to make life more affordable by taking the GST off essentials. Tomorrow, the PM is caving to our demand and announcing a winter GST holiday on some essentials. This is a win for families struggling to get by. His plan is temporary. We’d make it permanent.

Thirty Canadian MPs — including NDP and Green leaders Jagmeet Singh and Elizabeth May, and four members of the governing Liberal caucus — have joined forces with counterparts in New Zealand and Australia in support of recognizing a Palestinian state.

Canadian families are getting gouged on essentials while big corporations are posting record profits. We have a plan to take the GST off heating, phone/internet and kids’ clothes and pay for it by taxing excess profits. (In 2020, the PBO found such a tax would bring in $7.9 billion/yr)

I’m standing in solidarity with striking postal workers across the Northwest, including this crew in Terrace. Postal service is vital in rural communities like ours and nothing gets delivered without the hard work of these folks. Let’s have their backs.

I just learned the sad news that former premier John Horgan passed away. John was such an affable guy — someone who clearly loved learning about and being around people. My heartfelt condolences go out to his family. Travel well, Mr. Premier. And thanks for your service to our province.

First they did it to the rail workers. Now to the port workers. The right to bargain is protected by the constitution. If the Trudeau Liberals are so quick to force an end to lockouts, what incentive would any company have to negotiate with its workers? A dark day for labour rights in Canada.

It was heartening to see a large crowd at today’s Remembrance Day ceremony in Smithers. I always appreciate the words of padre Doug Campbell, who since 2014 has provided a thoughtful address at the ceremony. (I’ve posted his speech on my FB page).

Prince Rupert dentists stepped up early to participate in the NDP’s national dental care program. With dentists in Smithers, Terrace, Houston, Fort St James and Haida Gwaii now on board too, lots of folks are able to access much-needed care. Dental care is health care!
