Bootlicking flag-wavers for authoritarianism want to foster a fundamentally inhumane world. Why? Because they eagerly capitulate to largely made-up fears, and then seek to sublimate their abject cowardice into "action" in the form of bringing harm to others. It's pathetic.

Finally took all my music down from Spotify, or at least all of it that I directly control. As you've heard, Spotify CEO Daniel Ek invested ⅔ of a BILLION dollars into military technology company Helsing SE (of which he is also a chairman) with a focus on AI applications. Yeah, no thanks.

Last Friday (4th of July), I was unshakably depressed by the theme of the holiday, especially in light of the nauseating political developments immediately preceding. ~ 1:30 that afternoon, I decided "fuck this," & credit-carded myself a plane ticket to Stockholm. 3½ hours later, I was on the plane.

Then there were the vocals, @anamanaguchi.bsky.social and @bit.shifter.net jumping in with actual singing was a lovely surprise. It’s something I wish they had both done more of. Yeah, overall, the lineup was just stellar. It felt like the perfect mix of artists and styles.

Sometimes when you put out a comp, people phone it in, but that didn't happen here. Pretty much every track was a banger. Some covers added a fun slant (Videogame Orchestra, Nordloef), while others tapped into the original spirit and ran with it in chip form (PDF Format, Tugboat).

I remember someone telling me we'd hit 10,000 downloads within a few days on just one of those web hosts. Who knows the total number? It was huge. But why did it get so big? Well, for one, 8-bit tributes always do well, but this one stood out because the music was just great.

Then things blew up. News of the release was picked up by blogs like Kotaku, Wired, and Synthtopia, and soon we had to ask friends if we could use their webspace because the Internet Archive downloads were too slow. Eventually, we burned through all the webspace we'd borrowed just to keep up.

Yes, this is #Weezer - The 8-bit Album. Ross had been mentioning it to a few people here and there, and somehow it ended up getting linked on the official Weezer website around the time of release. Back then, we were using a basic website I'd built and hosting the MP3s on the Internet Archive.

Once again, I (Joe) really can't take much credit for this next release, which is undoubtedly the biggest thing we ever put out. It was Ross/arcadecoma who curated the whole tribute. When he sent it to me, I was blown away, but I still didn't realize it would get the attention it did.
