New Year, New Muslim American Mayor of NYC. Despite facing an unprecedented barrage by billionaires, Islamophobes, GOP racists, and the Democratic establishment, Mamdani has defied all odds and ascended to becoming the 112th mayor of NYC.

One underrated thing Mamdani has going for him is that he has always known he is ineligible for the presidency The profession of elected official attracts a lot of people with delusions of grandeur and an agenda built around getting to the job they want rather than doing the job they actually have

Sorry, know I'm posting a bit here, but there's an absolute shift in an alternate frame for government here running through this speech. "We will restore that trust by walking a different path. One where government is no longer the final recourse" Proactive, not reactive.

Oh and this one "taxing the wealthiest few" ... actual tax reform, seriously. I know this may make the least sexy & most boring policy lecturer on the planet, but reversing the trend towards flatter & flatter tax tiers is just so hot. You listening, Aotearoa New Zealand?

Really listen to this rhetoric: "Here, where the language of the New Deal was born, we will return the vast resources of this city to the workers who call it home". Yes, proof will be in the actions of course, but that focus on "workers" is important.

To me this speaks to REALLY taking a different yardstick to politics, a different vision of what things are being measured against. More often than not our voting choices are just between colours of neoliberalism, flavours of centrist capitalist incrementalism. Not actual alternate critical lens.

In Europe, fireworks are increasingly being used as weapons to attack police, fire and ambulance crews, and members of the public. When is the awful AoNZ government going to recognise we are on that same trajectory here if we don't ban fireworks NOW.

Sweeny makes a really insightful suggestion here that I haven't previously considered: that anti-trans stories were a bone being thrown to right wingers that wouldn't scare off most liberals. I saw local far right fascists do the same thing in the antivax groups they ran during the pandemic.
