Last night I finished Lost Records: Bloom and Rage. Such a beautiful, effective game about four friends in the 90s who find an abandoned cabin in the woods, and then things get witchy and surreal (very My Thing). Highly recommend for folks who like a game that tells a story.

8/ June is Pride Month—a time to celebrate, but also confront hard truths. A new survey shows stark health gaps for trans Americans, especially in mental health and access to care. Recent federal actions may make things worse, from budget cuts to erased LGBTQ+ health data.

4/ Covid cases may rise soon due to the NB.1.1 variant, which already caused waves abroad. It's now 37% of U.S. tests and growing. Some early local signals (wastewater spikes, test positivity) are showing. A summer wave wouldn’t be surprising, but for now, national levels remain low.

Reminder for your Pride events to book ASL interpreters, use wheelchair-accessible venues, and enforce a masking policy, at minimum. We can’t be proud to be part of a community until they include all of us—yes, “us” means your weird queer disabled friend, too. 😌

The “Covid is only a risk to the vulnerable” narrative helped pave the way for the atrocities happening now It conditioned people to see the disabled & marginalized as “less than” To blame us for covid restrictions, economic issues & more It numbed people to our suffering so they won’t fight back

If you don’t want to take the booster don’t. But to prevent adults from having the choice is depraved.

Today feels like a good day to remind folks: it's easy to help promote and push books that come out from the big 5 publishers. They have amazing marketing budgets & distribution. But there are so many indie titles being released that are phenomenal. Search the dark corners. Find us.

I'm revisiting David Lynch's Catching the Big Fish today, looking back at what I marked on my first read through... It's sad to know that there will be no new David Lynch art put out into the world (but aren't we lucky to have what we have, to have lived at the same time as his Weather Reports??)

I dislike the idea of flash as just a shorter, short story beholden to all the rules & constraints of short stories. In that case, it becomes a trick of compression alone, a hurried up, stunted short story that caters to declining attention spans. If you write flash, is that what you're aiming for?

My three favorite books of 2024 were Beautyland by Marie-Helene Bertino, The Book of Love by Kelly Link, and State of Paradise by Laura van den Berg. All magical, inventive, and so fun! They've stuck with me all year.
