I've taught European history for thirty years. Americans have always asked me how the Holocaust was possible, how Germans could have enabled a madman reveling in mass murder to carry out his plans. Now we can see in real time how this is enabled; now we Americans have front-row seats.

I don’t think anyone is surprised that a man so entirely devoid of morality, so fully defined by his desire to dominate and punish, would revel in violent fantasies of destruction and mass murder. But this is utterly shocking nonetheless. A deranged horror show. An acute threat to humanity.

A key challenge throughout the Trump era has been to make sure the silliness and buffoonery of it all doesn’t obscure how extreme and dangerous this is - to not allow ourselves to be lulled into a false sense of security by the clownishness, the ridiculousness of this man.

I hope we never allow ourselves to get so jaded, so cynical, so faux-“savvy” that we lose the ability to feel outrage and shock. Shock and outrage are the only appropriate guidance here, as they rightfully demand a response beyond “normalcy” – one that acknowledges the acute crisis we are in.

To conservatives who’ve objected when some of us have suggested Trump is a fascist, and who’ve complained when some us point out that much of real existing American conservatism has devolved into fascism, if you’re silent about Trump’s threat of genocide you’re proving the point you’ve objected to.

You can't separate anti-immigrant and anti-trans politics from what is happening with Iran. When MAGA picked transphobia and nativism as its organizing principle, it selected for the capacity to treat entire categories of people as civilizational threats whose elimination is an act of self-defense.

“We shall repeal the twentieth century”: That is how self-identified “radical reactionary” Murray Rothbard described the Right’s vision in 1992. That really is the core project of Trumpism: Roll back whatever racial and social progress has been achieved over the past century and a half.

This realization is deeply unsettling: There is no moral arc of the universe, progress can always be reversed, victories are never guaranteed to last. But it should also be empowering and, at the very least, create the sense of urgency that is needed to propel America forward.
