What a week! After a busy petition kickoff day on Tuesday, we hit the doors hard this weekend with @chicagogrowthproj.bsky.social, talking to neighbors across our district about the fight to build more housing, modernize public transit, and bring new leadership to the Northside.

Tomorrow marks an exciting milestone: two of our endorsed candidates, Nick Uniejewski and Drake Warren, can start collecting petition signatures! We need your help knocking on doors and gathering support from neighbors to ensure their names get on the ballot.

This is bonkers

We're all for expanding service to underserved communities, but we need smarter infrastructure decisions. @starlinechicago.bsky.social Chicago is locally funding 2/3 of the cost, and yet we're heading toward a fiscal cliff and our current state of the CTA service leaves much to be desired.

The CTA should be having this conversation, too, at least for the red and blue lines, but instead, we're spending our money, time, and political capital on the red line extension.

tomorrow morning some of the Chicago City Council will meet to approve some new housing...but does every 2, 3, 4, and 6-flat need to get approved one proposal at a time?

The lack of urgency... We need a holistic approach to building more housing, not these drawn out, piecemeal plans. Do electeds care that we’ve been leading in rent increases & supply shortages? Do they realize we desperately need to grow the tax base to meet debt obligations?

It's safe to assume the vast majority of these neighbors' homes were not voted on by the residents who came before them. So who gives them the power to deny housing that we desperately need on land they don't own?

While Cut the Tape is on the right path, it still seems we're dealing with piecemeal improvements when the entire system needs reform. Proactively upzoning a corridor here and there will not be sufficient for meeting the fiscal, housing, and climate crises ahead.

Could foot traffic alone sustain the businesses along a permanently pedestrianized Lincoln Ave? Yes, obviously. But for the skeptics, consider the example of Church Street in Burlington, VT (population: 44,743). The four-block ped-only marketplace has had a 90% occupancy rate or better for 45 years!

One of the big topics in transit governance reform conversations is always "accountability", but we really need to be talking about two different accountability measures: service design and service delivery. While they certainly overlap, they also require two very different skillsets to execute. 1/
