Absolutely. And in the case of our campus, there is also a huge push to replace unionized graduate worker labor with AI so we can continue increasing enrollments without spending more on grad workers and faculty, which is itself driven by the big cuts to federal grants that R1s depend on.

The fact that society does not seem to any longer value investing in education, at any level of it from K-Ph.D., does not mean that what makes for high quality teaching & learning has changed. It just means we're lazy & greedy, as a society, & don't want to invest in things or do hard work anymore.

Thanks so much for your reporting on this, Ben. I just got an email from my campus's IT office triumphantly advertising free student access to four different AI models -- at the same time as we have a hiring freeze, caps on grad enrollment, and a 7% budget cut -- and wanted to scream.

In retrospect, changing reliable and pretty cheap wires for shitty, unreliable wireless and Bluetooth was kind of the technology endgame for everything.
