We are the archives of the University of Winnipeg and its founding colleges dating back to 1871.
Originally marking the anniversary of the 1918 that ended the First World War, Remembrance Day now remembers those who died in military service, and honour those who served in wartime. In WW1, UW's preceding colleges were one of many communities affected as students and faculty served in the war.

Insect pests are one of the biggest dangers to archival collections, especially paper records. Common pests archivists watch out for include silverfish, book-lice, carpet beetles, and clothes moths among others. (photo: Joseph Berger,

Happy Halloween! A favourite holiday photo in our collection is of Henry Duckworth and a young class ready for trick-or-treating. He was UW's 2nd president (1971-1981) and is known for contributions to physics and university education. The Duckworth Centre, opened in 1984, is named after him.

! These images depict the Canadian Women's Press Club (CWPC). From 1904 to the early 1990's, it was a organization of Canadian journalists that prior to 1971 was only open to women. In 1971 the group was renamed to The Media Club of Canada.

Digitization is an important tool in ensuring archival records remain accessible, but its complicated work! Its more than a simple scan; involving assessment, digitization, metadata compilation, quality assurance, and the ongoing storage and maintenance of digital records.

Celebrating Thanksgiving Day on campus with friends has a long history at UW. From the Ilo McHaffie Fonds, here is a photo of Wesley College students enjoying a Thanksgiving meal together in 1919. Wesley College is one of the preceding colleges that became the University of Winnipeg in 1967.

Fall Reading Week is here! Take some time to de-stress and study before classes resume October 20th. Winter Reading Week has been around a while, but a Fall break in Manitoba is actually relatively new. UWinnipeg was the first University in the province to enact a Fall Reading week starting in 2016.

A new accession (2023.029) is now available! These records are from an oral history project by Catherine MacDonald and Shirley Payment on the "Crowe Case". In 1958, the firing of United College professor Harry Sherman Crowe raised questions on the security of academic freedom and tenure nationally.

An essential part for any donation to an archives is a deed of gift signed by the donor and the University. It transfers the ownership to the Archives so that staff can better manage and share the records, but also establishes any usage limitations or restrictions placed by the donor.

An important part of archival work is ensuring that historical records, regardless of format, remain safe so they can be accessed far into the future. This includes keeping them secured from theft, but also safe from the risks of environmental factors like pests or high humidity and temperature.

While we collect many archival records, we also have some unique and unusual artifacts preserved! This includes artifacts from UW's sports teams, the Wesmen. Highlighted from their collection is a light-box sign from 2001, as well as a 1963-1964 jacket from alumnus and Basketball player Bob Law.

Labour day first became a National holiday in 1894, but it has a history stretching back even longer. There had been a tradition of local labour holidays in several communities, which in the 1880's transitioned into events organized by craft worker unions.

This historic building in Winnipeg is an iconic landmark and a surviving piece of the railway era. Designed by architects George A. Ross and David H. Macfarlane and opened in 1913, the Fort Garry Hotel catered to wealthy passengers of Canada's then expanding railway network.

Yearbooks at UW have a weird history, partly due to it originally being separate colleges. For students of Wesley College, their yearbook was a special issue of the student paper Vox Wesleyana. For Manitoba College, biographies about graduating students were included in the Manitoba College Journal.

Many records at the UW archives are donated by members of the University and its preceding colleges. While these records depict student life, they also show the all the varied careers and experiences of UW community members after school. This includes members of the Grant and Reynolds family.

While often what is kept at an archives is rooted strongly in the past, its also important to preserve the documentary history of modern activism and related organizations. The records photographed here come from the Two-Spirited People of Manitoba Inc.

With sadness we share news of the passing of a member of the UW community, Dr. M. Kaye Kerr. From her start at the psychology department in 1969 until her retirement in 2001, Dr. Kerr has been an active voice in child psychology and care.

Since the invention of cameras photographs have been essential in sharing news. A great example is from a donation by photographer Robert Barrow; a 3,345 set of transparency slides purchased after the closure of the CBC Manitoba photolab in the 1980s. -

When looking back at old records you can often see how issues have evolved over time. For example; a 1978 issue of the Uniter paper featuring a column about the use of rats in Psychology labs. While comedic in tone, it referenced a discussion about animal testing between Professor Mills and Kelly.
