Meshweaver, Dictynidae family. These small spiders are recognized by their irregular webs made of many tangled strands on plants, as seen here on this wintergreen flower stalk. This one is also eating a small fly. #Bugsky

American wintergreen, Pyrola americana. Another gorgeous woodland groundcover. These are the flower stalks, probably flowering right about now or soon. I've never seen them flower myself. They are in the heath family, so rely of fungus for proper growth, making them very site specific.

Mayflowers, Maianthemum canadense. One of my favorites and a woodland classic. These small plants spread via rhizomes to form dense colonies when happy. They do not like being transplanted and are difficult to grow from seed though. So best enjoyed while you're in the woods.

Peck's Skipper, Polites peckius. First Skipper I saw this year. These small butterflies are named for their distinct skipping flight, flying short bursts and then landing. Most of their caterpillars feed on grasses, including invasive turf grass species, allowing them to stay rather common. #Bugsky

Ninebark, Physocarpus opulifolius. Probably one of the most common native ornamental shrubs and for good reason. They are gorgeous and flower heavily. This is technically a dark leaved cultivar I believe. But the flowers were still loaded with pollinators.

Multiflora roses, Rosa multiflora. One of the most dreadful invasive species in my region. They originally came here as rootstock to less weedy more attractive roses. Multiflora roses are very hardy, so they would graft the stems of less hardy roses to them.

Blackberry flowers, Rubus sp. Blackberries flower slightly later than raspberries and tend to have much bigger showier flowers. They are quite stunning and I hope to grow some one day.

Japanese Iris, Iris sanguinea. Originally I misidentified these as the native blue flag irises, but they certainly are not after closer inspection. Thankfully they aren't horribly invasive like yellow flag irises are, these seem to just be a couple random feral ones. Still, I don't trust them.

Two-banded Japanese weevil, Psuedocneorhinus bifasciatus. A general non-native pest, these two specifically feeding on the leaves of my Aster. Weevils are interesting beetles overall though. Their wings are fused shut and they msin defense system is dropping and playing dead. #Bugsky

For most of the year, adult Plains Spadefoots (Spea bombifrons) bury themselves underground ... & then they emerge when warm temperatures & rain finally arrive. This amphibian breeds in temporary pools & races the clock: eggs hatch in 48 hours, & tadpoles metamorphose in two weeks. Spectacular.

The stupendous Cr'orcadiles are among the largest predatory vertebrates on the planet. Five species of these oceanic titans have been documented to date, with a distribution stretching almost across the globe. The Weeping Cr'orca of the Indian Ocean is the best studied of these. (8/14)

Specialists of many kinds are also known, with the long-nosed Sawsnout Torpedo being one of the most extreme. These South American coastal predators launch attacks from dense kelp, slicing laterally to stun or even bisect prey as large as a person. (6/14)

The name Torpedo Croc was coined to refer to these fully seagoing species, which have become emblematic of marine life in the New Age of Reptiles. The generalised Torpedo Croc form, as seen in the Tiger and Red Eye Torpedo, is one adapted for pursuit of fish and other nektonic animals. (4/14)
