We've recently created a new collection of legacy maps in our Catalogue, which will be added to over time. For now, we have 3 interesting maps available to view and download: data.bas.ac.uk/collections/... The Scotia Arc is one of our favourites. The map was a massive compilation effort at the time!

This is Latady Island(pronounced la-tarday) in the Bellingshausen Sea in Antarctica. It is 115 km long, but as far as we can see from BAS records no human being has ever landed on it.

The foster parents are a 7-year-old female and a 6-year-old male, both individuals born at Adventure World.

The dark patch marks the emperor penguin colony at Atka Bay. Nearby linear snow ridges are natural sastrugi, sculpted by polar winds—an image that contrasts living colonies with the harsh physical patterns of Antarctic ice.

The emperor penguin colony at Cape Darlington, that we discovered in 2019, has moved 40 km south due to an ice shelf break off. Its current location is just south of Butler Island and it looks much better for the change of location.
