Why do diesel engines produce so much gunk -- dangerous ultrafine particulates and oxides of nitrogen? Because the combustion is poorly controlled, proceeds as a flame front in the injected fuel, is locally very hot (so oxidises the nitrogen in air), but is also often incomplete (hence particulates)

But the smaller diesel engines used in such vehicles are incredibly dirty, producing bulk particulates and bulk NOx, both so horrendous for public health some cities in Europe have banned them outright.

Now even visible in the fuel sales stats. Practically all of these behemoths are diesel, not petrol. They're heavy, boxy, anti-aerodynamic designs, so the higher energy density and somewhat better efficiency available with diesel fuel are very much preferred. www.drive.com.au/news/service...
