The effort and skill on display elevates it from derivation to art, becoming a celebration of both the original work and the secondary artist's transformative contribution to the process. This is why AI images can never be art. It is derivation without effort. Transformation without skill.

As a former classical musician, I need to assert that art based on another artist's creation can still absolutely be valuable art in and of itself. Nobody reasonable ever shamed a concert musician just because they never composed their own orchestral music, so we shouldn't do that to fan art either.
