I don't know if the public is fully aware of the totally unhinged way that DHS interacts/corresponds with reporters--reporters who are engaging in basic functions of their job by reaching out for comment/clarification. These exchanges don't always make it into reporting.

An estimated 26% of U.S. farmworkers are women, and they face disproportionate risk of sexual harassment and assault in their workplaces. In an industry where their income, housing or immigration status may depend on supervisors who perpetuate sexual violence, reporting abuse can seem like a trap.

The only thing that I want to learn during a sexual harassment prevention training workshop is how many abusers have been fired by the org. If they don’t fire people, then they’re not serious.

Political leaders almost never bring up sexual violence in good faith. They reject the political interventions that would reduce violence and instead objectify victims to convince voters to accept state actions we would reject otherwise—like censorship, discrimination, and war.

I’ve had this debate in class with STEM students before. They NEED to believe that eugenics and scientific racism etc are things of the past and are ‘pseudosciences’ because ‘science is objective’ and the ‘scientific method defends from bias.’ It’s a dangerous way to think.

I describe it as such as a historian of disability because I want to remind scientists and the world that the history of science IS the history of eugenics, scientific racism and medical racism, and more. I’m not comforting them with the idea that it was a ‘pseudoscience.’ This is your history.

People are quick to condemn dead rapists. Living rapists? Not so much.

Experts know how to end sexual violence. The persistence of the problem is almost entirely political. The reason survivor advocates call for stripping perpetrators of their power is because they constantly use that power to interfere in anti-violence work.

A lot of survivors have been harmed through calls for “empathy” for their perpetrators or the insistence that a group should value “both people.” This is rape culture veiled in progressive language. It minimizes violence, centers the perpetrator, and pushes out survivors.

If there is going to be a reckoning about violence in progressive organizing spaces, we need to be prepared to hear survivors’ critiques of restorative justice. A lot of progressives think restorative justice is the only path forward, but it can be weaponized and co-opted just like other processes.

I agree that it’s sticky. But perpetrators are always operating from their power in society (e.g., gender), even if they also belong to marginalized groups. It’s important to name that—in part to push back against the idea that being oppressed makes someone violent and requires more state control.

Most of the men who have violently SA’ed me have worked in “helping professions.” Most have been “educators.”

I hope one of the things we will take away from this moment is that if we want survivors to be able to come forward immediately, then we need to be willing to protect them no matter how much we like, respect, or fear their perpetrator.
