So nice to have him back home today; we got to crack into the cake, and it was delicious (as was the homemade chili and cornbread - yum!).

My first attempt at a cranberry snack cake! I never thought of myself as much of a cook, but having a partner who genuinely loves my cooking changed my mindset. Learning to resist the knee-jerk “I’m not good at this” and accept his compliments turned what felt like a chore into a joyful act of love.

She has a finely tuned aesthetic that leans to the strange, dark, inscrutable, and kinky. And then there are items she's collected which exhibit a banality that like a David Lynch film suggest that the slightest scratch to the surface will reveal a depth of darkness that you may not wish to penetrate

James Sallis was one of the true towering figures, crossing multiple genres and categories, but particularly in crime fiction. His death at the age of 81 is a real loss, but we do have two more books of his to look forward to this year.

It’s always a nice surprise when a stack of new-to-you used books includes a pristine hardcover of a title you’ve been wanting to read, only to crack it open and realize it’s signed by the author!

Book no. 5 and 6 of the year are cozy rereads of some iconic Dorothy Parker volumes (Enough Rope and Death & Taxes). Happy to find myself reading at my usual clip again. Last year was light for me but it’s been nice to find my rhythm and routine again this month 📚

Today’s hot take: now people just need to be supporting the community movement against ICE. Save the critiques about the imperial boomerang & naysaying about how the movement’s not radical enough or doing everything you want to do. What’s happening in Minneapolis is huge and can have a global impact

I Adore Michael Silverblatt TOSH BERMAN “Every once in a while, I would pick up the telephone, and it was Michael on the other side. Once you do that, your day and schedule are thrown in the wastebasket. Because chatting with Michael is an art in itself…”

We're just over a month out from Mardi Gras (yikes!) and one person guessed my costume the other day; I imagine it's now pretty obvious with these pieces together. My costume this year is Fortunato (zombificato!) from The Cask of Amontillado. Still lots to do!

Hi perhaps you would like a little break from the news in the form of an essay about my trip to Centralia, Pennsylvania, the town that’s been on fire since 1962—a place where surprisingly I found a great deal of hope, wonder, and mystery.

Sixty years into the fire that left the town condemned, Centralia is now a haven for wild plants and butterflies.
